Learn About Classical Music Music Sample The musical example you just heard is a Miniature Piano Concerto by the composer Haydn. Before the Classical Period of Music, several other style periods of music existed. Included in these are the Renaissance period and the Baroque period of music. Most people have heard Baroque music many times before but haven't realized it. Bach is the most famous of the Baroque composers. The Baroque period in fact was dated around his lifetime. The Baroque period included music composed between 1600 and 1750. The music was known for its emotional expressionism and use of ornamentation and contrasts. Another famous Baroque composer is Vivaldi. After the Classical era came a period of music known as the Romantic period. This music used flowing, lyrical melodies, clear phrases, traditional harmonies, and strong tonality. Romantic music also evoked much emotion and drama. This was in opposition to the Classical period of cool, unemotional music. Romantic music spanned from 1820 up to about 1900. Composers of this period include Tchaikovsky and Brahms. During this time a style of music known as Impressionism was also born. Impressionistic music and paintings were dream-like, and unclear. They created a blurred and muted impression both in sight and sound. The main composer of this style was Debusssy. Lastly, all of the formal music composed during our century is simply known as Twentieth Century music. The twentieth century has seen music composed of many, many different styles. In these pieces, melody is not as important, rhythms are usually jagged, non-traditional harmonies are used and tonality is an option most composers don't choose.
